Animal Crossing’s Latest Update Brings an Influx of Lazy Guests to Hotels

Animal Crossing: New Horizons has just dropped its highly anticipated 3.0 update, and Switch players are diving headfirst into the new Resort Hotels. Here, you can host a variety of visitors and deck out their guest rooms, reminiscent of the Happy Home Paradise DLC. With Kapp’n and his turtle family at the helm, the Resort offers a chance to meet and mingle with villagers who might not be permanent fixtures on your island. Early reports from players indicate a common theme: they’re welcoming a lot of Lazy guests.

Now, don’t take that the wrong way—’Lazy’ is simply one of the personality types in the game. Animal Crossing: New Horizons features eight main personalities: Snooty, Peppy, Cranky, Jock, Smug, Sisterly, Normal, and of course, Lazy. While the game doesn’t explicitly label these personalities, they shape how villagers interact. Jocks, for instance, are the sporty types who love to chat about fitness, while Cranky villagers can be a bit grumpy and harder to befriend. Each personality also influences daily behaviors; for example, Snooty villagers have odd sleep schedules, often hitting the hay at 2:30 AM and waking up at 8 AM.

Lazy villagers are typically male characters known for their laid-back humor and friendly nature, getting along with just about everyone. They’re so relaxed that they won’t even bat an eye if they stumble upon a cockroach in your home. Out of the 412 characters in New Horizons, there are 63 Lazy villagers, including fan favorites like Bob the purple cat and Lucky the mummy dog.

While Lazy isn’t the most common personality type, you wouldn’t know it from the buzz surrounding the update. Across platforms like Reddit and various Animal Crossing communities, it seems nearly every player’s first Resort guest is of the Lazy variety. So far, I haven’t come across anyone reporting a different personality type at their hotel, but it’s still early days. Regardless of who you host, all guests can explore your island, visiting spots like the museum and Nook’s Cranny.

The good news is that there are plenty of beloved Lazy characters that players would be thrilled to host. However, just as there are popular villagers—who can forget the hype around Raymond?—there are also those that tend to draw groans. Historically, fan polls and tier lists show that gorillas rank low on the desirability scale. Al, the fitness-loving gorilla dressed in crimson, is often met with disappointment, despite being classified as a ‘Lazy’ villager.

If the thought of receiving an undesirable guest worries you, remember that New Horizons lets you invite characters using Amiibo cards. Plus, you don’t have to be a fan of a hotel guest to decorate their rooms and earn tickets for cool new items. If you’re feeling mischievous, you might even channel your dislike into creating the most outrageous rooms possible for those characters you can’t stand. After all, Animal Crossing’s decoration grading tends to be more about the vibes than strict criteria.
