After six years of dedication, an MMO player’s request for custom sandals is finally being fulfilled by the developers.
Old School RuneScape’s player-driven narrative has taken another exciting turn. Back in June 2020, a now-deleted Reddit user made a straightforward suggestion: merge two pairs of in-game footwear, the Holy Sandals and Mole Slippers, to create the Holy Moleys, a truly unbeatable pair of shoes. This idea has since been championed by others, particularly by user Cptn_Honda, affectionately known as “The Holy Moleys Guy” on the OSRS subreddit.
“I am once again asking for your support on Holy Moleys,” Cptn_Honda stated in 2023.
“Jagex hire this man,” commented users in response to a 2022 pitch for the Holy Moleys from another enthusiastic supporter.
“Not sure if this is intentional but there are actually star-nosed moles. This is genuinely genius,” noted another player, drawing a connection between the slippers’ design and the holy star of the RuneScape god Saradomin.
Finally, their persistence has paid off. OSRS developer Jagex has proposed its own official version of the Holy Moleys.
In a January blog post discussing updates to “getting around” in the game, Jagex introduced the Holy Moleys alongside potential adjustments to the Devout Boots, allowing players to break them down into Holy Sandals that could then be combined with Mole Slippers. “We agree. It’s time,” Jagex stated.
There has been intense discussion about whether the Holy Moleys should visually resemble the sandals or the boots. A very serious matter in OSRS.
As is customary with OSRS updates, the Holy Moleys and other changes will be subject to a player vote through an in-game polling system. This blog post served as a preview for an upcoming poll, but the focus was unmistakable. The Holy Moleys must pass the vote (though it would be quite amusing if they didn’t).
A response to one celebratory post encapsulated the moment: “We did it Reddit!”
In a related tale, an MMO player dedicated three years to amassing a legendary treasure collection, only to blow it all in one epic session: “When I click ‘Time Played’ the game just tells me to touch grass.”
