Mastering Smart Splitters in Satisfactory: A Guide
Once you push through the early stages of Satisfactory, your production systems will become increasingly intricate. As you ramp up from producing a handful of items to a vast array, the number of conveyor belts transporting everything will multiply. Mastering Smart Splitters is essential for progressing in Satisfactory, as they help keep your production lines organized and easy to manage.
So, what exactly is a Smart Splitter? A standard splitter is straightforward—it divides a single conveyor belt into up to three separate belts. This is perfect for a smelter that’s generating more ingots than any single production line can handle, like directing one smelter’s output to create plates, rods, and screws. There’s no setup required; it’s simply plug-and-play. But what sets a Smart Splitter apart? Smart Splitters are programmable, enabling you to decide which items on a belt go to which output. There are also advanced programmable splitters that can sort more than three outputs at once.
To unlock Smart Splitters, you’ll need Reinforced Iron Plates, Rotors, and AI Limiters. The first two are obtained through the standard progression of building the space elevator, while AI Limiters can be unlocked via the MAM Research machine in the Caterium research tree. You’ll need to craft 200 Quickwire and 50 Copper Sheets for that. Once you have the AI Limiter, create 10 of them along with another 50 Reinforced Plates to unlock the Smart Splitter.
Using Smart Splitters is quite straightforward. They allow you to send up to three different items down the same conveyor belt, splitting them evenly across the outputs. After placing a Smart Splitter, you can click on it to configure the outputs. For instance, you could route all components for a specific end product down one belt and have them split off into the appropriate machines. This method works well for early components, but as you advance, the ratios can become more complex, requiring some calculations to optimize your splits.
Another effective use of Smart Splitters is to maximize the efficiency of your production lines. For example, if you have a concrete production line, once you upgrade to Mk3 miners and belts, you’ll produce far more concrete than you can store or use. In this scenario, a Smart Splitter can direct the concrete to two destinations—storage and manufacturing—though you might still encounter bottlenecks. While having full belts isn’t necessarily bad, it can lead to inefficiencies, with your line potentially operating at only 20% capacity.
Instead, you can direct that third output to an Awesome Sink. In addition to the specific items you can program into the Smart Splitter, there’s a general option called Overflow. This feature ensures that the two main lines are filled first, then sends any excess down the overflow path. This way, instead of a machine running at low capacity, you can continuously funnel surplus concrete into the Awesome Sink. While concrete doesn’t yield many points on its own, consistently sending it there will accumulate points over time.
By implementing Smart Splitters and Awesome Sink overflow on every production line you can think of, you’ll significantly boost your machines’ efficiency and rack up Awesome Sink points. Smart Splitters are vital for optimizing your production lines, enhancing both organization and overall output. Don’t overlook this essential tool!
