All the Upcoming Star Wars Movies and TV Shows from Lucasfilm
2026 is shaping up to be a monumental year for Star Wars fans. While 2025 had its share of excitement with the thrilling finales of Andor and Skeleton Crew, along with the return of Star Wars: Visions for a third season, it was relatively quiet for the franchise overall. Following the mixed reception of Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker in 2019 and Solo: A Star Wars Story the previous year, the focus has largely shifted to TV series. We’ve seen a wealth of live-action shows like The Mandalorian, Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Acolyte, and Ahsoka, alongside animated series such as The Bad Batch. However, 2026 and 2027 will see Star Wars making a grand return to theaters with The Mandalorian and Grogu, as well as Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter. But don’t worry, the franchise will still grace your screens with the animated series Maul: Shadow Lord and Visions’ Ninth Jedi, both set to debut in 2026.
In recent years, plans for the future of the Star Wars universe have been laid out, with updates on upcoming projects and some release dates confirmed. However, several films have been canceled or put on hold, including Rian Johnson’s trilogy and Kevin Feige’s project, while others, like Donald Glover’s elusive Lando film, have faced delays. One intriguing project that surfaced unexpectedly was The Hunt for Ben Solo, leaked by Adam Driver himself.
To keep you in the loop about what’s coming, we’ve compiled a comprehensive calendar of upcoming Star Wars releases. Here’s what to look forward to, where to catch them, and their release dates. And if you’re feeling nostalgic, it might be a good time to revisit the entire Star Wars saga. Here’s the best order to watch existing Star Wars projects.
**Release date: May 22, 2026, in theaters**
It’s been three years since we last saw Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal), aka the Mandalorian, and Grogu. When we last checked in, they were settled on Nevarro, but now they’re heading to the big screen.
Directed by Jon Favreau and produced by Favreau, Kathleen Kennedy, and Dave Filoni, The Mandalorian and Grogu will follow their adventures as they confront Imperial warlords while aiding a new, fledgling New Republic. Along the way, they’ll encounter new characters, including Colonel Ward (Sigourney Weaver), who enlists them to combat crime in the Outer Rim, and Zeb Orrelios (Steve Blum) from Star Wars: Rebels.
Favreau has confirmed that there will be no season 4 of The Mandalorian. Although scripts were in the works, the chance to continue Din and Grogu’s story as a film was too good to pass up, leaving fans disappointed at the lack of more episodes.
**Release date: TBA, coming to Disney Plus**
While an official release date for Maul: Shadow Lord hasn’t been announced, Disney’s 2026 slate indicates it’s expected to premiere sometime that year. With a comic prequel spinoff set to release in March, we speculate that Maul’s escapades will hit screens in the summer.
Details about the Maul series are sparse, but it will be animated and focus on the ex-Sith Lord as he attempts to “rebuild his criminal syndicate on a planet untouched by the Empire.” Given that Maul meets his end in Rebels, we anticipate the series will explore his journey post-Clone Wars but pre-Rebels. Sam Witwer is confirmed to reprise his role as Maul.
**Release date: TBA, coming to Disney Plus**
Although not part of the “canon” universe, several spinoffs and continuations have emerged from the anthology series Star Wars: Visions. Most have taken the form of novels or manga, but Production I.G’s The Ninth Jedi is set to receive an animated spinoff, expected to debut in 2026 according to Disney’s release schedule.
**Release date: Feb. 19, 2027, in theaters**
If you’ve ever wanted to experience Star Wars: A New Hope as audiences did back in 1977, you’re in luck. Lucasfilm has confirmed that the original Star Wars will be shown in theaters for a “limited time.”
And they mean the original: no Greedo shooting first, no CGI Jabba the Hutt, and no digital Dewbacks. When you head to theaters in February 2027, it’ll feel like a trip back to 1977.
**Release date: May 28, 2027, in theaters**
Director Shawn Levy, known for Deadpool & Wolverine and Free Guy, is working on a Star Wars film set after the sequel trilogy, featuring a star-studded cast that includes Ryan Gosling, whose character remains a mystery. Joining him are Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Amy Adams, Flynn Gray, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, and Daniel Ings.
Claudio Miranda, the director of photography for Top Gun: Maverick, will bring a fresh visual style to the film, particularly in aerial combat scenes.
Levy expressed his excitement about developing a new Star Wars film, stating, “From the day Kathy Kennedy called me up, inviting me to develop an original adventure in this incredible Star Wars galaxy, this experience has been a dream come true, creatively and personally.”
Dave Filoni, Lucasfilm’s chief creative officer and Ahsoka showrunner, is hard at work on the second season of Ahsoka. There was speculation that it would lead into the events of The Mandalorian and Grogu film, but with the show currently undated, that seems less likely.
Season 2 will pick up right after the first, featuring two intertwining storylines. The first follows Ahsoka (Rosario Dawson) and Sabine (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) as they are pursued by Shin (Ivanna Sakhno) on Peridea. Rory McCann will take over the role of Baylan Skoll, who will also be involved in this storyline. The second storyline will center on Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen) as he launches an attack on the new Republic. Returning cast members include Eman Esfandi as Ezra Bridger, Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Hera Syndulla.
Currently, there’s no confirmed release window for the second season, and it doesn’t appear in Disney’s 2026 slate, leading fans to speculate it may be pushed to 2027.
Director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s planned Star Wars film is set 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker, in a new era called the New Jedi Order, focusing on Rey Skywalker (Daisy Ridley) as she attempts to rebuild the Jedi Order.
Initially associated with Damon Lindelof, the project saw a change in screenwriters, with Steven Knight stepping in, only to leave later. In January 2025, George Nolfi was confirmed as a writer for the Rey film. At Star Wars Celebration 2025, Kathleen Kennedy and Dave Filoni reaffirmed that the Rey movie, along with projects from James Mangold, Taika Waititi, and Simon Kinberg, are still in development. However, with Kennedy’s departure as Lucasfilm president, the future of Obaid-Chinoy’s Rey film remains uncertain.
The New Republic era has yet to be fully explored, but Dave Filoni, a key figure in Star Wars TV and now co-president of Lucasfilm, is set to direct a film focusing on the New Republic government that rises after the Empire’s fall.
Set between The Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, Filoni’s film aims to “close out the interconnected stories told in The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and other Disney Plus series.” These series are linked through character relationships, cloning technology, and post-Imperial power struggles. Given the significance of Emperor Palpatine’s return and Snoke’s rise in the sequel trilogy, Filoni’s film could provide crucial lore.
Like the Rey film, Filoni’s untitled New Republic film was confirmed to still be in development at Star Wars Celebration 2025.
James Mangold’s Star Wars film, known for his work on Logan and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, was also confirmed to be in development at Star Wars Celebration 2025.
Mangold’s project is unique as it takes place 25,000 years before the original trilogy, exploring the origins of the Jedi. He aims to tackle questions that have intrigued fans since 1977, such as the origins of the Force and its discovery.
At Star Wars Celebration 2023, Mangold described his film as “a Biblical epic, like [The] Ten Commandments, about the dawning of the Force.” While Kathleen Kennedy mentioned that Mangold was working on the script, the project has since been put on the back burner, according to the former Lucasfilm president.
Writer-producer-director Simon Kinberg, who co-created and wrote for Star Wars: Rebels, is now set to develop a new Star Wars trilogy.
Reports about the film have been mixed: some sources claim Kinberg’s films will comprise Episodes 10-12 of The Skywalker Saga, while others clarify that they are not intended as a continuation of that saga. What is clear is that, as Kathleen Kennedy confirmed, the project is envisioned as a trilogy to propel the franchise into a new and exciting future.
Kinberg recently shared his enthusiasm for the planned trilogy, stating, “just to be told there’d be more movies would have been unbelievable. To be allowed on the set of any of them was already a dream. My enthusiasm only grows with working on and around it.”
He also cited Andor, from showrunner Tony Gilroy, as a significant source of inspiration, calling it “about as good of science fiction storytelling as you can do in any franchise.”
Among all the Star Wars films in development, Taika Waititi’s project remains the most enigmatic, despite being announced back in 2020. There were concerns it might be shelved in 2023, but both Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and Waititi confirmed it is still in the works. Waititi mentioned he doesn’t want to rush the film.
The latest updates on Waititi’s film came from Kennedy and Dave Filoni at Star Wars Celebration 2025, where they reiterated that it is still in development, with Kennedy stating the project is “still somewhat alive.” Not the most reassuring news!
In 2020, Lucasfilm announced several projects; most have either been released, like Andor and The Acolyte, or canceled, such as Rangers of the New Republic. However, some remain in a strange limbo, neither confirmed as canceled nor discussed since their announcement.
One such project is A Droid Story, an animated film intended for Disney Plus, following a new character guided by the beloved duo R2-D2 and C-3PO. Unfortunately, there have been no recent updates on this project.
Another project stuck in limbo is the spinoff starring Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, first announced in December 2020. Its development has been rocky, with the Disney Plus series being reworked into a film. The original showrunner, Justin Simien, departed during this transition, learning of the change through the announcement. Donald Glover and his brother, Stephen Glover, have since taken over writing duties for the Lando spinoff.
The shift from a TV show to a film puts the project in uncertain territory. This isn’t the first time Disney has made such a pivot; Obi-Wan Kenobi was initially planned as a movie before becoming a series. However, there’s still hope. Kathleen Kennedy has indicated that Glover has submitted a script, and like Taika Waititi’s Star Wars project, it’s “still somewhat alive.”
