Critical Role Campaign 4 Hints at an Exciting Link to Vox Machina

Critical Role has ensured that Campaign 4 stands apart from its predecessors. With Brennan Lee Mulligan at the helm instead of Matthew Mercer, this new adventure unfolds in the war-torn realm of Aramán, filled with chaotic magic, political intrigue, and a host of undead.

That said, there are still nods to Exandria, the backdrop of the earlier campaigns. In the latest episode, “Make Merry,” a character receives an item that will be instantly familiar to fans of Vox Machina.

During a campfire scene at the end of “Make Merry,” Kattigan Vale (Robbie Daymond) approaches Tyranny (Whitney Moore) with a knife she had previously taken from Ulbid, a kind-hearted gnome the group encountered on their journey to Sloak. After scolding Tyranny for the theft, Kattigan returns the knife to her, aiming to impart a lesson in wisdom.

Mulligan emphasized that this knife is no ordinary weapon. He described Tyranny’s attunement to it (the D&D process for equipping and utilizing magical items), stating: “You attune to this knife, but its final form eludes you. For indeed in another world, another time, an object like this might have been referred to as a Vestige of Divergence.”

For those new to Critical Role, this reference might fly under the radar. In Exandria, a significant Calamity occurred—a conflict between two factions of gods. To prepare for this war, these deities created legendary artifacts known as Vestiges of Divergence. Many of these artifacts were lost in the aftermath, some scattered and unrecovered, while others remained with governments or noble families. Vox Machina discovered several during their adventures, with the Mighty Nein also finding one.

What makes a Vestige of Divergence intriguing is its ability to grow in power alongside its wielder’s experience and strength. However, unlocking its full potential requires “extreme personal challenge, evolution, and achievement.”

For a D&D player, wielding a weapon that evolves with your character is incredibly advantageous, often negating the need to hunt for upgrades. It’s noteworthy that Tyranny has obtained such a weapon so early in Campaign 4, but if the knife truly functions like a Vestige of Divergence, she’ll need to endure significant trials to access its full power.

Fortunately—or unfortunately for Tyranny—it seems she won’t have to wait long for those challenges. In “Make Merry,” she realizes that her patron, Ksha’aravi, the High Prince of Demonkind and the Shadow of Suffering, favors her when she embraces her namesake and spreads chaos. Will the knife reach its full potential only if she continues down this path? It’s too early in the campaign to tell, but it certainly presents an intriguing dilemma for Whitney Moore moving forward.

While not officially labeled a Vestige of Divergence in Aramán, the knife shares similarities, prompting questions about whether the wild magic resulting from the Shapers’ War and the gods’ absence influences its existence. It also raises the possibility of other legendary artifacts appearing in Campaign 4. This connection to Exandria enriches the worldbuilding of Aramán, making it even more thrilling for viewers invested in the broader Critical Role universe.
