The Conjuring Universe Announces Release Date for New Horror Prequel, First Communion, Just Months After Final Film Premiere

After its unexpected Halloween reveal, the prequel to The Conjuring, titled First Communion, now has an official release date.

You might recall that The Conjuring: Last Rites was heavily promoted as the concluding chapter of the long-running series. However, following its record-breaking global opening as the highest-grossing horror film ever, it seems that the creators decided to keep the momentum going. Last Rites raked in an impressive $495 million worldwide against a modest budget of $55 million. Overall, the franchise, including the Annabelle spin-offs, has amassed over $2.7 billion to date.

First Communion is keeping its storyline tightly under wraps but is scheduled to hit theaters on September 10, 2027. Rodrigue Hart will be making his feature-length directorial debut, while Richard Naing and Ian Goldberg, known for their work on the underrated horror film The Autopsy of Jane Doe, will be writing the script.

What we do know is that the prequel will feature Ed and Lorraine Warren, with reports suggesting it will delve into the couple’s “early years.” There’s a possibility that new actors will be cast to portray a younger Ed and Lorraine, rather than having Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson reprise their roles.
