Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Surpasses Elden Ring with the Most Game of the Year Awards and Continues to Shine

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has officially claimed the title of the most-awarded Game of the Year ever, surpassing the impressive record previously held by FromSoftware’s expansive title, Elden Ring.

A ResetEra user named Angie has been diligently tracking the 2025 Game of the Year awards, which include accolades from major ceremonies like The Game Awards and the Golden Joystick Awards, as well as various gaming-focused platforms and their reader choice awards. According to the eligibility criteria set by ResetEra, GOTY awards from a range of sources—such as websites, magazines, newspapers, radio, TV broadcasts, podcasts, industry events, and online entertainment companies—are counted if they have been active for at least a year, feature multiple staff members, and do not focus solely on one platform.

With a significant amount of data to compile, the latest tally (updated yesterday) shows that the French JRPG Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has amassed a staggering 436 GOTY wins. The community is already anticipating additional awards from upcoming events like the BAFTA Game Awards and GDC Awards, which could further boost this impressive total. As it stands, Sandfall Interactive’s debut title has already eclipsed the previous record held by Elden Ring.

As of February 2024, ResetEra had recorded Elden Ring’s total GOTY wins at 429—there was a minor error in this year’s thread that mistakenly listed it as 435, but that has since been corrected. Regardless, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has now taken the lead, surpassing the win totals of notable titles like The Last of Us Part 2, Baldur’s Gate 3, The Witcher 3, and virtually every other game in history. That’s quite an achievement.

The big question now is how long Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 can maintain this record. With 2026 shaping up to be a monumental year for gaming, especially with the highly anticipated GTA 6 on the horizon, it’s a formidable number to beat. There’s a strong possibility that the total could climb even higher.

Interestingly, one of Maelle’s most notorious attacks in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was considered “very bad” during development. In an attempt to fix it, Sandfall inadvertently made it incredibly powerful without properly testing the change.
