New Masters of the Universe Trailer Reveals Battle Cat, Eternia, and Idris Elba as Man-At-Arms

The first trailer for Masters of the Universe has dropped, and it’s surprisingly self-aware.

The promo kicks off with a retro television set, as an unseen narrator chimes in, “Not long ago, when times were simpler… This was a healthy breakfast,” while we see someone pouring milk over colorful cereal. “This was a powerful workout,” he continues, showing a group engaged in an aerobics class. “And this was a hero,” he declares, just as the animated He-Man makes his entrance.

“Perhaps now more than ever, we need that kind of hero again,” the narrator wraps up, transitioning to Nicholas Galitzine’s Adam, who appears to be watching the cartoon in a neon-lit ’80s arcade. The vibe is reminiscent of Barbie, leaving us to ponder if we’re in for something delightfully meta. Given that both franchises are under Mattel, it’s definitely a possibility.

Luckily, we won’t have to wait long for more details, as another (likely longer) trailer is set to drop tomorrow.

For now, this brief clip packs in a lot for fans, showcasing He-Man’s home planet Eternia, Battle Cat, Camila Mendes’ Teela, Kristen Wiig’s Roboto, and Idris Elba’s Duncan/Man-At-Arms.

While we haven’t seen them in action yet, Jared Leto will portray He-Man’s nemesis Skeletor, and Alison Brie is on board as Skeletor’s right-hand woman, Evil-Lyn. Directed by Travis Knight, the film features a script by Chris Butler, Aaron Nee, Adam Nee, and Dave Callaham.

Masters of the Universe is set to hit theaters on June 5.
