Man Accused of Impersonating ICE Agent in Attempted PlayStation Theft
A teenager in Pittsburgh found himself in a life-or-death situation when a man armed with a knife broke into his family’s home, claiming to be an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent while attempting to steal electronics, including a PlayStation console.
According to a recently filed criminal complaint, 35-year-old William Gregory allegedly entered a residence in the Beltzhoover neighborhood and began shouting that he was an ICE agent, demanding identification from the Hispanic family living there. Armed with a large pocket knife, he threatened the 17-year-old boy as he tried to make off with a PlayStation and snatched the boy’s phone. The specific model of the PlayStation was not detailed in the report.
In a brave act of self-defense, the teenager fought back, delivering a punch that knocked Gregory out cold. When police arrived, they found the intruder still unconscious.
A neighbor, Crystal Calloway, expressed her concerns about the incident, noting the diversity of the neighborhood and the alarming nature of someone impersonating an ICE agent.
Gregory now faces charges of ethnic intimidation and burglary and is currently in custody. He was also wanted for a prior robbery charge.
Calloway praised the teenager’s quick thinking, stating, “It’s a great thing that the young man, his adrenaline went through going and action and went to defend his family, you know, thank goodness for that.”
This incident highlights a troubling trend, as there have been multiple cases of criminals posing as ICE agents to carry out illegal activities. The aggressive tactics of ICE agents, often shrouded in anonymity, have made it easier for individuals to impersonate them, raising serious concerns about safety and accountability.
