Former Fallout developer claims their new steampunk RPG is their most ambitious project yet, with the biggest challenge being the shift to first-person gameplay.

Brian Fargo, the original mind behind Fallout and the founder of Interplay and InXile, has declared that Clockwork Revolution, the studio’s upcoming RPG, is their most ambitious project yet.

In a recent interview, Fargo stated, “Yes, Clockwork Revolution is our most ambitious title, probably by a factor of ten.” He elaborated on the challenges of translating the deep reactivity found in their isometric games into a first-person format. “The scope of assets and the ability to make changes is much more difficult and takes much longer. Everything you want to react to the player has to be built out much more visually.”

While InXile and Fargo are well-known for their isometric RPGs, Clockwork Revolution represents a significant departure from that style. Fargo noted, “We’ve made some really great role-playing games in the past, which were isometric. These were rated highly, though the isometric style can tend to be more niche on the whole.”

Discussing the transition to a first-person perspective, Fargo remarked, “People experience the real world every day through first-person, and there’s something to be said for the immersion it offers and its ability to reach more people.” He emphasized his love for isometric games, acknowledging their unique appeal, but for Clockwork Revolution, the team aimed to blend their first-person Unreal experience with deep role-playing reactivity and enhanced visual cinematics to craft a truly immersive world.

Clockwork Revolution was unveiled in 2023, with a follow-up presentation at the Xbox Game Showcase last year. However, a release date is still under wraps, and it seems unlikely to make an appearance in the upcoming Xbox Developer Direct. Fans are eagerly awaiting news on when they can dive into this ambitious new title.
