Sophie Turner redefines Lara Croft, promising a deeper look at the iconic character in Amazon’s Tomb Raider series.
Emerging from her unexpected rise as a polygonal icon in the 90s, Amazon’s new take on Lara Croft aims to explore a different dimension of this legendary video game character.
In a conversation with an outlet, Sophie Turner, the actress stepping into Lara’s boots, emphasized that her portrayal will steer clear of the “sex bombshell” stereotype.
“It’s about her and her story and what drives her, rather than what so many people also love about her, which is how hot she is in the games and the movies,” Turner shared.
This iteration of Lara Croft, brought to life with the creative input of Phoebe Waller-Bridge, will highlight her intelligence and capabilities.
“I really want to show the other side,” Turner noted. “She’s so unashamedly capable. She is not a woman who hides her strengths at all.”
Interestingly, the first glimpse of Turner’s Lara Croft draws heavily from the classic Tomb Raider era, featuring iconic red shades reminiscent of Tomb Raider 3 and the covers of various magazines from that time.
It’s worth mentioning that Lara has not fully embraced her sexuality in nearly 25 years, a shift from the days when Angelina Jolie portrayed her. The subsequent Legend trilogy and the rebooted series have leaned more towards her adventurous exploits and personal struggles.
Turner’s portrayal has also garnered support from Alix Wilton Reagan, who voices Lara in this year’s Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis and the upcoming Tomb Raider: Catalyst. She expressed her enthusiasm on Instagram, stating, “Lara looking mighty fine / fire / fierce these days. @sophieturner – I AM HERE FOR IT.”
The release date for Amazon’s Tomb Raider TV show is still under wraps.
