Sinners Sets New Record for Most Oscar Nominations Ever

Vampires are making a grand return! That’s the buzz surrounding the 2026 Academy Awards nominations. The horror flick *Sinners*, set in 1930s Mississippi and helmed by writer/director Ryan Coogler, has shattered records by racking up an impressive 16 nominations across 24 categories.

Among the nominations are the prestigious awards for Best Picture, Actor, Actress, Director, and Writer. The film also garnered recognition in technical categories such as Makeup and Hairstyling, Sound, and Production Design. With these 16 nominations, Coogler has more than doubled his previous Oscar nods from his three earlier films — *Creed* and both *Black Panther* installments.

*Sinners* has surpassed the previous record set in 1950 by *All About Eve*, which received 14 nominations. This record was later matched by *Titanic* in 1998. This year, Paul Thomas Anderson’s *One Battle After Another* also achieved 14 nominations, while Christopher Nolan’s *Oppenheimer* came close with 13 nominations for the 2024 awards.

While *Sinners* dominated the nominations, there was a surprising absence of recognition for a major film. *Wicked: For Good* received no nominations at all, a stark contrast to the first *Wicked* movie, which earned 10 nominations last year and won two Oscars for Production Design and Costumes.

The 98th Academy Awards will be broadcast on ABC on March 15, at 7 p.m. EDT/4 p.m. PDT.
