Streamer Exits Twitch Tournament After Teammates Boot Him, Receives $3,000 in Donations Equivalent to First Prize: “Stop Giving Me Money”
A streamer who faced an unexpected exit from a Marvel Rivals competition has turned the tables thanks to generous donations from fans. After a heated disagreement over team dynamics, Kingsman265 received contributions amounting to what he would have earned had he competed and secured first place.
The drama unfolded during the Deadpool Creator Cup, a tournament organized by a fellow streamer in partnership with NetEase to promote the hero shooter following the arrival of Deadpool. As is typical for these events, teams of streamers and content creators came together to battle for cash prizes.
With a total prize pool of $40,000, the winning team members were set to receive $3,000 each. Teams were drafted on January 13, allowing five days for practice before the tournament kicked off on January 18.
Kingsman265 was placed on Team Cece alongside creators Cece, BigPuffer, Zazzastack, Luciyasa, and Kayceedilla. Tensions flared during a practice session when Kingsman265, who has extensive experience with Marvel Rivals, expressed his belief that the team could optimize their strategy further.
“I’ve been Rank 1 before, I’ve been top 500 on every role. I’m very accomplished, I know what I’m doing, I’m not being egotistical about it, I’m simply stating the facts,” he stated during a livestream, as detailed in a video he shared on January 18. “I’m just here to win the tournament, I need that money, I’m broke, and $3,000 is a lot of money for me.”
However, his teammates were put off by his attitude, leading to his removal from the team. Cece mentioned that “disrespectful” comments prompted discussions among the other members. “Basim was not having it. He asked me, and I was like ‘If you think so.’ Lowkey, I didn’t want the disrespect either,” she explained in a livestream after the incident.
Despite the setback, Kingsman265’s video has garnered over 1.5 million views, attracting a wave of new followers. When he returned to stream on January 20, he was pleasantly surprised. “This is ridiculous,” he laughed. “I’ve already made more than the $3,000 that I would have won for first place in the tournament, so stop giving me money. I don’t want pity money.”
In the meantime, Cece issued an apology for her handling of the situation on Twitter. “Emotions were high and I failed to notice which resulted in me snapping at Kingsman,” she wrote. “I apologize as no matter what, raising voices and instantly shutting down a teammate is not the right thing to do.” Following the incident, she has been dropped by her sponsor, who is now attempting to reach out to Kingsman.
Marvel Rivals features a roster of powerful heroes and villains, but none can rival the strength of a passionate community. Well, except maybe Squirrel Girl (if you know, you know).
NetEase has announced that Marvel Rivals will implement a new “combat behavior detection system” aimed at penalizing AFK cosmetic farmers, promising “warnings” and potential “permanent account bans” for offenders.
