New Maul: Shadow Lord Trailer Hints at the Rise of Star Wars’ Most Intriguing Sith

Among the upcoming Star Wars series set to launch in the near future—an uncertain timeline that currently encompasses all future Star Wars films, aside from The Mandalorian & Grogu and Starfighter—Maul: Shadow Lord stands out as one of the most eagerly awaited.

Fans have been left in the dark regarding an official release date for this animated series from Lucasfilm Animation, but it was initially slated to premiere sometime this year. In late 2025, a prequel spinoff comic was announced, scheduled for release in March, leading us to speculate that we might see more of the former Sith in the summer. However, with the recent teaser trailer for Maul: Shadow Lord, we finally have a confirmed release date: April 6.

Details about the series have been limited, but the trailer reveals that Maul has been busy rebuilding his criminal empire on “a planet untouched by the Empire.” And yes, it’s confirmed that Sam Witwer will reprise his role as Maul.

The trailer is packed with action, showcasing several new characters, including Captain Brander Lawson from the Marvel comic, who seems to be on a mission to track him down. Additionally, there’s a pink Twi’lek Jedi whose name is still under wraps, but she appears to be teaming up with Maul for some kind of mission. Given that the last Jedi who allied with Maul nearly became his apprentice, it’s reasonable to speculate that this new character might find herself in a similar position in the series. This could certainly please fans of Darth Talon, a character originally conceived by George Lucas as Maul’s apprentice.

While Maul has a definitive ending in Rebels, Disney and Lucasfilm are not shying away from exploring the Sith Lord’s untold stories, much like they did with Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader. After being presumed dead following his defeat in 1999’s Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, where Obi-Wan (Ewan McGregor) cut him in half, Maul has made a surprising return in later seasons of The Clone Wars (2008-2020) and Rebels, as well as a brief appearance in the live-action film Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018).

As Maul steps into the spotlight in his own series, fans are eager to see what new adventures he will bring to the expansive Star Wars universe. Fortunately, we won’t have to wait long to find out.

Maul: Shadow Lord will be available for streaming on Disney Plus starting April 6.
