Playground Games: New Fable is a Reboot, Not a Sequel, to Bring Fresh Identity to the Franchise

Fable is set to return us to the beloved world of Albion after nearly 15 years, and as Playground Games’ general manager Ralph Fulton emphasizes in our chat, the game is simply titled Fable for a compelling reason: it’s a “Playground Fable game.”

The recent Xbox Developer Direct showcased that Fable is stepping into a fresh chapter, featuring a fully open-world Albion, a revamped morality system, and a wealth of NPCs to interact with. While this is a true reboot rather than a direct sequel, Playground is committed to honoring the essence of the series that Lionhead created.

“From the very beginning, we dedicated a lot of time to pondering: what is Fable? What defines a Fable game?” Fulton shares. “We approached it from a high-level perspective, focusing on the core essence of Fable. We discussed this extensively and established a few guiding principles that we felt were essential for the game to truly be called Fable.”

“We enshrined these principles at the start of our creative process as we began to determine what elements to include in the game. I’ve always told the team, especially in the early stages, that this has to be Playground’s Fable,” Fulton adds.

“We’re not Lionhead. You can see Lionhead’s influence in the original trilogy. I genuinely believe that a team’s personality shines through in their work, and you can see that in the original trilogy. We are a different studio with a different culture, and it wouldn’t be authentic for us to simply create Fable 4. One of the main reasons this isn’t a sequel is that we felt it was necessary to reboot the franchise, to leave our mark, and to create a Playground Fable game moving forward. That’s what we’ve aimed to achieve.”

The team was given the freedom during the concept phase to “create the Fable game they envisioned,” as Fulton explains, “which is a key aspect of a reboot. We’re balancing the challenge of satisfying the millions of Fable fans worldwide while also appealing to newcomers who may have never played Fable before.”

“It’s been a long time since the Fable trilogy wrapped up, and many potential players may not have experienced Fable. We need to ensure that this game is inviting for them as well,” Fulton states. “By crafting a Playground game without the constraint of strictly adhering to the originals, we’ve arrived at a game that remains true to the spirit of those classic titles while also incorporating elements that will resonate with today’s gamers.”

Fable is set to launch on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PS5 as part of the lineup of new games arriving in Autumn 2026.
