Fable Returns: After 16 Years, the New Game Launches This Fall on Xbox, PC, and PS5

Discover how Fable’s expansive fantasy world allows you to interact with over 1,000 living NPCs in our latest interview with Playground Games.

It’s been 16 years since Fable 3 debuted and six years since the announcement of the series’ revival by Playground Games, known for their work on Forza Horizon. Today, the developers finally revealed details about the fourth installment, simply titled Fable, confirming its release later this year. Excitingly, this launch will also include PS5.

During the recent Xbox Developer Direct, it was announced that Fable will be available in “autumn 2026” for Xbox Series X/S, PC, and PS5. While it’s becoming more common to see major Xbox Game Studios titles on PlayStation, this marks the first time any Fable game will be playable on a Sony console.

The original Fable trilogy was released on Xbox and Xbox 360, with some PC versions, under the direction of Peter Molyneux and Lionhead Studios. True to Molyneux’s ambitious vision, the games aimed high, often falling short but still delivering some of the most cherished RPG experiences of their time.

Although the new Fable is being developed by a fresh team at a new studio, that ambition remains. The game promises a vibrant world populated by 1,000 NPCs, each leading a simulated life with daily routines influenced by their personalities and beliefs. These beliefs will also affect how NPCs perceive your actions, offering a more complex approach to morality than the traditional black-and-white systems seen in earlier RPGs.

Perhaps most importantly, the game retains its distinctly British humor. We’ll see how Playground’s interpretation of this beloved series unfolds when it launches this fall.
