Double Fine’s upcoming title is a pottery-themed PvP brawler featuring team battles and a vibrant social hub, set to launch this spring on PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC.
Double Fine, the studio behind Psychonauts and Keeper, is gearing up to launch a new title in spring 2026 called Kiln. This marks a shift for the studio, known for its quirky single-player experiences, as Kiln is a competitive multiplayer game.
At its core, Kiln appears to be a mech game with a unique twist. Revealed during a recent Xbox Developer Direct 2026 livestream, and detailed by project lead Derek Brand, Kiln is a team-based brawler where players control battle suits that resemble clay pots. Instead of customizing traditional mechs, you’ll be molding and shaping clay to create a balance between offense and defense. Each pot comes with its own weight class, special attacks, and players can share their designs to jump straight into the action.
In the reveal video, studio head Tim Schafer showcased the pot-making process, emphasizing accessibility over a complex pottery simulation. The sculpting mechanics are surprisingly intricate, offering a variety of tools and techniques, all supported by an intuitive system that helps you along the way.
“We wanted to make the pot-making super easy and accessible – it’s just a button and a control stick – and you can make any kind of shape you wanted. We wanted people to immediately feel like they’re masters at this craft,” Brand explains.
Once you’ve crafted your perfect pot, you’ll dive into PvP battles, aiming to shatter the opposing team’s creations. The main mode, Quench, features classic 4v4 gameplay where players not only attack each other’s pots but also race to transport water to the enemy’s kiln. This clever integration of the pottery theme means that the capacity of your pot influences your movement, attacks, and water-carrying abilities. Additionally, certain areas or tunnels can only be accessed with specific pot shapes or sizes.
Double Fine promises a diverse array of maps that expand the game’s universe. Players embody little spirits residing within the pots, exploring realms inspired by various mythologies, including Greek and Egyptian. If you’ve been enjoying Hades 2, some of the themes may feel familiar.
“For example, Hermes has a map set in his shipping facility, where packages are constantly being sent out and treadmills are moving back and forth, shooting packages you’ll need to dodge. Then there’s Dionysus’ map, which resembles a Boogie Lounge, featuring a dance floor at its center – stepping onto one of the tiles forces you to dance, creating a dynamic battleground where some players are fighting while others are caught dancing,” Brand shares.
Between matches, players can relax at a social hub known as the Wedge, which features a mix of decorations, minigames, and an in-game store that operates on credits earned through gameplay. Double Fine has indicated that more content will be added after launch.
Kiln is set to release on PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC this spring, with a closed beta on the horizon.
