Fable Reboot Will Not Include a Dog Companion, Playground Lead Confirms
Since the reveal of the Fable reboot, one burning question has been on the minds of fans: will there be a dog? After the recent Xbox Developer Direct left us hanging, I took the opportunity to ask Playground Games’ general manager, Ralph Fulton, directly.
“Honestly, I was hoping nobody would bring that up, but I knew it was coming. We do not have a dog in this game,” Fulton confirmed.
So, it’s official: our hero won’t have a loyal canine companion when we explore the open world of Albion later this year. Fulton didn’t have much time to elaborate on this choice during our chat, but he did mention, “I guess what I would say is that the original trilogy didn’t have a dog until 2.”
He’s right. The beloved dog first appeared in the 2008 sequel, Fable 2. This furry sidekick would help our hero—whether they leaned towards good or evil—by sniffing out treasure, growling at nearby enemies, and even assisting in certain quests. While Fable 3 also featured a dog, its role wasn’t as central as in its predecessor.
Given the affection many fans have for Fable 2 (myself included), the absence of a dog feels significant. However, with over 1,000 NPCs populating the world for us to interact with, it seems we won’t be lacking in companionship.
While I can’t help but feel a bit disappointed about not having a fluffy friend by my side in Albion, the upcoming action-RPG promises to bring back many beloved life-sim elements—like buying property, taking on jobs, and exploring romance—along with character customization and the return of the iconic Bowerstone from Fable 2. As a longtime fan of the series, the Fable reboot is definitely on my radar.
Fable is set to launch on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PS5 in Autumn 2026.
