Playground Games Uncovers Key Insights from Original Fable Creator’s Archives
Playground Games, the new stewards of the Fable franchise, have taken a thoughtful approach in crafting their vision, steering clear of simply replicating the legacy left by Lionhead Games. Instead, they’ve delved into the series’ history, unearthing design documents that were tucked away before Xbox’s acquisition led to Lionhead’s unfortunate closure—a mismanagement that Xbox leadership has acknowledged in the past. They’re determined not to repeat those mistakes.
In a recent update, Fable’s general manager and game director Ralph Fulton shared insights into what defines a Fable game.
“We came up with a bunch of things – the first of which I would say we actually inherited from Lionhead,” he explains. “When we started working on this project, we got a treasure trove of documents from Lionhead that had been in storage.
“One document stood out to me as brilliantly succinct: ‘Fable is Fairytale, not Fantasy’ – which is just super neat.”
While digging up these documents might feel like a form of grave robbing given Lionhead’s fate, it’s inspiring to see a new generation of developers reconnecting with the core principles established by the original creators of the IP they now carry forward. Those five words encapsulate the essence of Fable perfectly.
We also spoke with Fulton about how Fable’s expansive world allows players to interact with over 1,000 unique characters. He emphasized, “It would be inauthentic for us to try and just make Fable 4. We felt we needed to reboot the franchise and put our own stamp on it.”
Officially titled just Fable, the game is set to launch this fall after a 16-year wait, available on Xbox, PC, and PS5.
