Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s Esquie actor expresses desire to reprise the role, but feels the story has reached its conclusion.
Whatever your thoughts on the other characters in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, it’s hard not to have a soft spot for Esquie. Designed to resemble a plush toy, he embodies the gentle giant archetype—until he doesn’t. The voice actor who brought him to life is eager to step back into the role, though he has some reservations about the future.
In a recent chat reflecting on his career, Maxence Cazorla, the voice behind Esquie and the motion capture performer for Verso and Gustave, expressed his affection for the character. “Yes. Yes, I would love to play Esquie again,” he said with enthusiasm.
However, he also noted, “If I don’t play Esquie again, I feel like the story is kind of complete. All the arcs, I’m OK if that’s it. There is a final dot to their story, a period.” While he treaded carefully around spoilers, he acknowledged that Clair Obscur’s narrative feels quite resolved. Each ending provides closure, making a sequel feel unnecessary.
That said, the door is always open, and given the massive success of Expedition 33, a follow-up could easily be on the table if the developers choose to pursue it. For now, the story wraps up on a high note.
Cazorla shared how significant the project was for him, stating, “I gave two years of my life to Expedition 33, with the motion capture and Esquie and the behind-the-scenes.” He added, “This game has changed my life, and if they ever want to work with me again on a future project, I’d love to.”
He concluded with a hopeful note: “You never know what comes next.” I wouldn’t mind seeing more of Esquie in the future, and I’m sure many others feel the same way. We’ll just have to wait and see what unfolds.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has outperformed Elden Ring in terms of Game of the Year accolades from various awards, and it’s still making waves.
