Master Chief’s voice actor expresses discomfort with Halo 5’s misleading ads, feeling they compromised his portrayal of the character.
The legendary voice of Master Chief, Steve Downes, has recently shared his thoughts on the misleading promotional videos for Halo 5, even a decade after their release.
For those who may not remember, leading up to Halo 5’s launch in 2015, various trailers and promotional content were released by 343 Industries and Microsoft. These materials showcased elements that ultimately didn’t make it into the game, particularly regarding the dynamic between Master Chief and the other playable character, Spartan Locke.
Downes expressed that performing for these misleading ads was challenging, as it felt like a betrayal to the character he portrayed. “During my sessions for the game, we also recorded separate sessions for promos and trailers. As many of you know, those trailers led players to believe one thing, while the actual game presented another,” he explained in a recent YouTube AMA. “I was aware of this during the recording and felt that the Chief was being directed in a way that didn’t sit right with me. Balancing the director’s vision with staying true to the character became more difficult than I was accustomed to.”
There has never been an official reason given for the deceptive nature of these pre-release materials, but a popular theory suggests that the game underwent significant changes after the ads were created, making it too late to revise them.
In the same AMA, Downes also addressed the current topic of generative AI in game development, firmly stating that AI voice cloning represents “where we cross a line.”
