Fable’s Vast World Features Over 1,000 NPCs, Leaving the Art Team Stunned by the Demand for Unique Beds: “They need what now?”

The upcoming Fable reboot is taking a fresh approach to the quirky life simulation aspects of the original trilogy. Developer Playground Games has created a vibrant ‘Living Population’ of 1,000 NPCs, each designed to respond uniquely to your heroic or villainous actions as a landowner. This ambitious project has certainly kept the art department busy, as they were tasked with crafting a thousand beds, give or take a few.

In a recent discussion about this fairytale adventure, the studio’s general manager, Ralph Fulton, shared that the team aimed for every NPC to be persistent. This means players can follow an NPC throughout their day, witnessing their daily routines unfold autonomously.

“They’ll wake up, head to work, enjoy some leisure time, return home, and go to bed,” he explained. As showcased in the latest Developer Direct, the locations where these characters work or sleep can shift based on your decisions—whether you’ve purchased all the buildings and evicted them or hired them for specific roles.

Fulton noted the challenges this presents for game development: “When you hear that, especially as a developer, you realize that every NPC—over 1,000 of them—needs a bed. You have to have that conversation with the environment art team, and their reaction is often, ‘They need what now?’ It definitely changes the way you approach building a game, as it has to be both functional and visually appealing.”

Fable is set to launch later this year on Xbox Series X|S, Game Pass, PC, and PS5.

In a related note, the Playground lead confirmed that the Fable reboot will not include a dog companion, quipping, “I was hoping that nobody would ask that question.”
