Fable allows players to explore and purchase any building in its world, staying true to the original game’s vision, according to the developers.

The new Fable, rebooted by Playground Games, stays impressively true to the original classics from Lionhead Studios, even though it’s been over a decade since the last mainline entry. One of the standout features is the ability to buy every building in the expansive world of Albion, a requirement the developers were keen to retain from the original trilogy.

This property ownership opens up a range of fun RPG scenarios, allowing players to take on roles like a frugal landlord or, as the game humorously labels it, a “Rich Tw*t.” However, this also means that every building must be accessible. Ralph Fulton from Playground Games mentioned in a recent interview that the team made it a priority for players to enter any building they come across.

Fulton elaborated, “So that detail needs to persist outside the house and inside the house as well. You can buy that house, you can live in it. That was, again, one of those kinds of requirements that we took from the original games, something that people will really want to do. This approach has shaped our world-building and environment design.”

Playground Games is committed to honoring Lionhead’s original vision in several other ways too. Expect plenty of chickens to chase and kick, along with the ability to romance, marry, build a family with, and even divorce nearly all of the 1,000 NPCs. The studio had access to a “treasure trove” of design documents from the classic Xbox titles, which has helped in this endeavor.

However, the Fable reboot will not include a dog companion, as confirmed by Playground’s lead, who humorously noted, “I was hoping that nobody would ask that question.”
