Fable’s Morality System Emphasizes Subjectivity, Reflecting Real-World Ethics

Playground Games is taking a fresh approach to the classic Fable with its upcoming reboot, but that doesn’t mean they’re sticking strictly to the original. One major change is the overhaul of the binary good and evil morality system, which has been reimagined to reflect the complexities of modern moral perspectives.

In a recent interview, studio general manager Ralph Fulton shared insights on this shift, noting that many games have evolved to tackle morality in more nuanced ways. “When we looked at the world, there’s no objective good or evil,” he explained. “What might be considered good or evil is entirely subjective, and that’s an intriguing concept to explore in a game.”

The trend in RPGs has also moved away from simplistic good versus evil frameworks. For example, Mass Effect featured a linear morality system, while Dragon Age: Inquisition focused on how choices impacted relationships with individuals and factions.

Fulton emphasized that the new Fable embraces a “shades of gray” approach to morality. Actions will shape your reputation within specific settlements, and the more you engage in certain behaviors, the more recognition you’ll receive from the inhabitants of that area.

The reboot’s system allows players to create various reputations, leading to diverse and unexpected reactions from the people of Albion. “In that classic Fable way, they act as this kind of Greek chorus, expressing their opinions on your actions,” Fulton noted. “This classic element fits well within our more nuanced morality system, enhancing the overall experience.”

Fulton also mentioned that the team is not trying to replicate the original Lionhead games, and the reboot will not be a traditional fantasy experience. “We all know what fantasy is – it’s The Witcher, it’s Skyrim, it’s Lord of the Rings,” he stated, indicating a desire to carve out a unique identity for the new Fable.
