Xbox Game Studios head hints at more State of Decay 3 updates in the coming year, but no specific timeline yet.
State of Decay 3 has been relatively quiet since its announcement five years ago, with only a brief glimpse of its zombie-infested open world in 2024. However, the head of Xbox Game Studios has shared a small update on the game’s development.
In a recent conversation with the lead of Xbox Game Studios, Craig Duncan, we discussed the company’s multiplatform strategy and recent reveals, including an impressive look at Fable. Naturally, we couldn’t resist asking if State of Decay 3 would make a return this year.
“I think the PR in this room will murder me if I give you the answer to that,” Duncan joked. “What I can say is that I’ve visited the studio several times over the last six to eight months. I’ve played the game with the team multiple times, and it’s coming along really well. We’re very excited about the franchise and its potential.”
Duncan also teased fans of State of Decay: “You’ll definitely see a lot more of it in the coming year… is that a good answer to your question? [laughter]”
But Undead Labs hasn’t just been focused on the new installment; they’ve also been busy with an impressive 38 major post-launch updates for State of Decay 2, many of which were released while they were simultaneously developing the sequel. The studio has also significantly expanded, now boasting six times the number of developers compared to when they created the first game in the series.
Additionally, the teams behind Gears of War and Avowed are collaborating to enhance State of Decay 3’s “much larger, truly shared open world.”
