Sam Raimi Shares His Attempt to Direct a Batman Film That Fell Through Due to Rights Issues
Director Sam Raimi, known for his iconic Spider-Man trilogy from the 2000s, has revealed that he once considered making a leap from Marvel to DC to helm a Batman film. “I love Batman. I tried to make a Batman film. I couldn’t get the rights,” he shared. Raimi also expressed his admiration for other DC characters, mentioning, “Superman’s always been one of my favorites,” and noted his interest in The Shadow, which he also couldn’t secure the rights to.
While the specifics of his envisioned Batman project remain unclear, Raimi’s enthusiasm for the DC universe is evident. He emphasized the importance of crafting original stories that resonate with fans, stating, “It would just take the writers to come up with an original story based on their character, that’s true to the character and part of their real universe.” He believes that a successful adaptation should reflect the love fans have for the characters and highlight their defining moments and challenges.
Raimi’s influence on the superhero genre is undeniable, having helped shape the Marvel Cinematic Universe with his Spider-Man films. After a long hiatus, he returned to the superhero realm with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Although he has previously stated he wouldn’t direct a potential Spider-Man 4, he hasn’t completely closed the door on superhero films.
With James Gunn and Peter Safran now at the helm of DC Studios, the company is diving deeper into its rich roster of characters, with upcoming projects featuring Batman’s sidekick Robin and the villain Clayface. This could be the perfect opportunity for Raimi to finally make his mark in the DC universe.
Fans can look forward to Robert Pattinson reprising his role as Batman in The Batman 2, along with Gunn’s The Brave and the Bold on the horizon.
