New Trailer for Super Mario Galaxy Movie Reveals Exciting Connection to First Film’s Post-Credits Scene

Nintendo and Illumination dropped an exciting new trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie during a recent Nintendo Direct focused on the animated film. Fans of the franchise will be thrilled to see the return of a beloved character: Birdo. That’s right, Birdo is making an appearance in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

But Birdo isn’t the only familiar face making waves in this film. According to Mario’s creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, Yoshi will also play a significant role. The trailer shows Yoshi joining Mario, Luigi, and the Toad crew after being rescued from the Sand Kingdom, a moment fans have been eagerly anticipating.

The trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie reveals more than just Yoshi’s comeback, which was hinted at in the post-credits scene of The Super Mario Bros. Movie. It showcases Mario and Peach navigating a perilous series of traps in Bowser’s castle, Luigi donning and energetically using the Frog Suit, and Yoshi alongside Toad defending Baby Mario and Baby Luigi from a T. rex, suggesting some intriguing backstory for the Mario Bros. There are also plenty of Easter eggs sprinkled throughout, including Yoshi wielding a Super Scope 6 and a cameo from the rarely seen enemy, Mouser, who joins Birdo from Super Mario Bros. 2.

In addition to the trailer, a new poster and an updated release date for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie have been revealed.

Returning to voice their characters are Chris Pratt (Mario), Anya Taylor-Joy (Peach), Charlie Day (Luigi), Jack Black (Bowser), Keegan-Michael Key (Toad), and Kevin Michael Richardson (Kamek). New cast members include Brie Larson as Rosalina and Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr.

This new Mario adventure will coincide with the 40th anniversary of the original Super Mario Bros. game. Looking ahead to 2026, it’s shaping up to be a big year for Mario and his friends, with three new releases already confirmed: Mario Tennis Fever in February, a Nintendo Switch 2 edition of Super Mario Bros. Wonder in March, and a new Yoshi platformer titled Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, likely arriving after Yoshi’s cinematic debut.

Mark your calendars: The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is set to hit theaters on April 1, now two days earlier than initially announced.
