Arc Raiders Introduces Disappointing Matchmaking: “Solos vs Squads” Offers Bonus XP for 1v3 Losses

Arc Raiders developer Embark Studios has announced an exciting update, Headwinds, set to launch on Tuesday, January 27. A standout feature of this update is a new matchmaking option for players at level 40 and above, dubbed “Solos vs Squads.” As the name suggests, this mode allows high-level solo raiders to dive into lobbies filled with three-player teams, which could lead to some intense encounters—if you’re feeling brave enough to take on the challenge.

The goal of this new mode is to introduce “higher-stakes encounters” to Arc Raiders, according to the studio. Experienced solo players can opt into the squad queue for a bit of extra thrill, and they’ll earn “bonus XP at the end of each run, regardless of outcome.”

That last part, “regardless of outcome,” is quite telling. It essentially means that when you inevitably face defeat—armed with just one gun against a trio of opponents—you’ll be reminded that three is indeed greater than one. Solo players are inherently at a disadvantage in this mode, and it’s hard to see the benefits outweighing the risks.

Three-player lobbies are already more focused on PvP compared to solo ones, with loot being more fiercely contested. By entering the squad queue as a solo player, you’re essentially signing up to be a target. Many teams will likely be eager to take down a lone raider, especially since players often get frustrated when a trio slips into a duo lobby. Voluntarily stepping into a more challenging situation doesn’t seem appealing.

Unless that bonus XP is substantial, I doubt many players will engage with this mode. Even if it is, the primary focus in Arc Raiders is loot, not experience points, and this mode significantly reduces the chances of successfully extracting loot as a solo player. However, if you thrive on stealth, enjoy the thrill of evasion, or are a PvP enthusiast who believes they can outsmart three opponents, you might find this mode intriguing.

There’s a certain novelty to this feature, and it could lead to some interesting social interactions. It’s refreshing to see Embark experimenting with features that may not attract a large audience. However, I can’t shake the feeling that this new matchmaking option might not resonate with the majority of players. Since the Headwinds announcement, I’ve noticed a lot of chatter about potential new modes that were… not this. It’s a bit disappointing, to say the least.

Personally, I’m more excited about the other aspects of the update. There’s a new “Bird City” minor map condition that transforms Buried City into a vibrant scene filled with flocks of birds carrying shiny treasures. Additionally, a new project will allow players to exchange Arc parts for bonus rewards, including cosmetics and blueprints. On the matchmaking front, there’s good news: squad invite settings will enable friends, not just the team leader, to invite others to lobbies, and open party settings will allow players to join directly.
