Resident Evil Requiem Promises a Stronger Duo Dynamic, Director Claims: “Grace and Leon Pair Like Fish and Rice”

Resident Evil Requiem director Koshi Nakanishi draws an intriguing parallel between the dual protagonists, Leon Kennedy and Grace Ashcroft, and sushi, suggesting that their combined experience is more satisfying than the individual elements alone.

In a conversation, Nakanishi encourages players to rethink their views on Resident Evil titles featuring multiple protagonists. He points out that one of the less favored entries, Resident Evil 6, had four distinct characters, which led to a fragmented gameplay experience that didn’t resonate well with fans.

Using a sushi analogy, Nakanishi invites potential players to see Grace and Leon’s segments as a cohesive and flavorful experience. “If sushi didn’t exist, a fish enthusiast might only crave sashimi, while a rice lover would stick to plain rice,” he explains.

While some players might prefer a fresh protagonist or lean towards a familiar face, Nakanishi urges a broader perspective. “We’re the ‘creators of sushi’ here,” he states. “Even if you think you prefer one style, the true ‘flavor’ of this game emerges from blending both styles.”

He further likens Grace’s gameplay to that of Claire Redfield from the acclaimed reimagining of the series. “Resident Evil 2 Remake and Resident Evil 4 Remake have essentially set the stage for our two characters,” Nakanishi notes. “In shorthand, Grace embodies the Resident Evil 2 style, while Leon represents the Resident Evil 4 style.”

He wraps up the sushi metaphor by emphasizing that their combination creates an experience greater than the sum of its parts. It sounds like a feast for gamers.

Going hands-on with Leon Kennedy in Resident Evil Requiem turned me into a skull-popping pro, and I can’t wait to play more.
