Strava and Komoot Introduce Offline Maps for Apple Watch Users
Strava and Komoot, two leading apps for cyclists, hikers, and runners, are finally introducing offline maps for the Apple Watch, addressing a significant pain point for many users. This means you can now view routes and track your workouts directly in your favorite app without the need to lug around a bulky iPhone.
Strava’s offline maps are exclusive to subscribers, while Komoot offers this feature for free, although unlocking additional map regions may require payment. Komoot also includes turn-by-turn navigation, enhancing its usability. Strava’s subscription costs $11.99 per month or $79.99 annually, plus applicable taxes.
The Apple Watch Ultra has been a game-changer with its ability to operate independently of an iPhone. However, athletes previously had to carry their phones for easy access to turn-by-turn directions or invest in additional apps like WorkOutDoors or Footpath. The introduction of offline maps in Strava and Komoot helps bridge the gap between these platforms, as Apple gradually chips away at Garmin’s edge.
Komoot currently excels in the basics, offering a more user-friendly experience than Strava, with promises of advanced features like auto-rerouting in future updates.
“Our goal was to make Komoot’s Apple Watch app fully capable on its own,” said Tom Eldred, product manager at Komoot. “For many of us, the ability to disconnect is the best part of being outdoors, so we wanted the community to have the freedom to leave their phone at home — or at least in their pocket.”
