Finding Cobalt in Hytale: A Guide

Hytale cobalt stands out as a unique ore in the game, positioned just above Hytale Thorium in the metal hierarchy, following Iron and Copper. However, its practical advantages for crafting tools and armor are somewhat unclear. Both Cobalt and Thorium gear exhibit similar durability, and while a Thorium Cuirass offers a solid 27% poison resistance, the Cobalt version only provides a 6% boost to signature attack damage. The Cobalt Longsword does have a durability edge, boasting 140 compared to Thorium’s 120, but that’s about the extent of its benefits.

As Hytale is still in early access, it seems Cobalt is undergoing balancing and hasn’t fully established its role yet. There are discussions about future updates introducing sideways progression, where different ores will enhance various character attributes, such as magic or damage builds. For now, though, Cobalt is just a blue ore that doesn’t significantly outperform Thorium. If you’re keen on collecting it, here’s where to find it.

Cobalt can be located in the frigid regions of Hytale known as the Whisperfrost Frontiers. To start your search, make your way to the snowy areas of the map. Since this is technically Zone 3, ensure you’re equipped with the best weapons, armor, and gear available, along with some Hytale Repair kits to keep your equipment in top shape during your exploration.

The most straightforward method to find Cobalt is by venturing underground. However, unlike Copper, Iron, and Thorium, you might not need to dig extensively, as I discovered several large, icy caverns that are easily accessible from the surface. These caverns can be vast and perilous, filled with ice water and winding passages that can lead to getting lost. If you do find yourself disoriented, the Unstuck option in the Hytale console commands can teleport you back to the surface.

What you’re looking for is a dull blue-grey ore lump embedded in the blocks. However, I didn’t encounter it in large quantities underground. I found plenty of Hytale Iron clusters, but only sporadic cobalt ore lumps scattered here and there.

To boost your chances of finding Cobalt, consider exploring the mountainsides. Climbing to the mountain tops can reveal cobalt ore lumps protruding from the sides, along with other ores like Hytale Copper, gold, and silver. When I discovered Cobalt this way, it often led to small veins of ore rather than isolated pieces, which was a more fruitful approach. I also noticed that I had the most luck finding Cobalt on the less snowy slopes at the edges of the Whisperfrost Frontier. While this could be a matter of chance, the key takeaway is that Cobalt is relatively easy to spot from a distance, allowing you to cover ground quickly, which compensates for its scarcity.
