Geralt Faces Frequent Demise in Next Month’s Witcher Game, Featuring Dandelion’s Narration and a Unique Fan-Fiction Twist

After nearly four years, a fresh entry in the Reigns series is on the horizon, and this time it’s all about Geralt of Rivia in a crossover with The Witcher. Titled Reigns: The Witcher, this card-based royalty simulator has you taking on quests as the White Wolf, navigating the randomness of the game to achieve the best outcomes.

A key detail to note is that while Geralt is the main character, the story is narrated by Dandelion, the beloved bard. This adds a musical flair to your experience, allowing you to hum along as you face increasingly challenging scenarios.

Expect appearances from familiar faces like Yennefer, Triss, and Vesemir, along with many others from the Witcher universe. There are also minigames to keep Geralt active, as he certainly won’t be limited to just cards.

For those new to the series, Reigns is all about making choices based on the luck of the draw. Your deck features characters and encounters, each requiring a decision that will affect your stats. While failure is part of the game, each attempt teaches you something valuable for your next run.

Developer Nerial has previously released several titles, including ones inspired by Game of Thrones and Romance of the Three Kingdoms, each with unique mechanics suited to their themes. Reigns: Three Kingdoms even introduced multiplayer. This time, narrative designer Oscar Harrington-Shaw and design director Francois Alliot emphasize a more combat-oriented approach.

“In the fight scenes, we aimed to capture the essence of Geralt’s swordplay within the simple mechanics of our game and the swiping system,” the developers explain. “The combat draws inspiration from Crypt of the Necrodancer, where players swipe left and right in rhythm to dodge enemy attacks while preparing to strike.”

When asked how to describe the game to fans of the main RPGs or books, the duo states, “It’s essentially a Witcher fan-fiction simulator. You play as Geralt, navigating the Path, all while experiencing the tales spun by Dandelion. The scenarios remain true to the Witcher universe, featuring quests that Geralt could realistically undertake, but they’re also narratives crafted by Dandelion for entertainment, perhaps after a drink or two.”

Players can look forward to humorous twists on well-known stories alongside entirely new adventures. It promises to feel both familiar and fresh for anyone acquainted with this world.

If it seems like Geralt meets his end frequently, that’s because he does. “He dies a lot, in very creative ways,” the developers note. “Each run reveals Dandelion attempting to narrate a new story of the Witcher, constantly inventing Geralt’s adventures and his various demises.”

Reigns: The Witcher is set to launch on February 25, so the wait isn’t long. While The Witcher 4 may take a while, this game will certainly keep fans entertained in the meantime.
