Wonder Man Finale: What Happens to Simon and Its Impact on the MCU?

Lights, camera, action: the finale of Wonder Man delivered all the excitement, featuring Simon Williams stepping into the spotlight of his superhero comeback, Trevor Slattery filming a jaw-dropping confession, and that exhilarating third-act escape.

So, what unfolded in the Wonder Man finale, and how does it tie into the broader MCU? Let’s break down the key moments from the eighth episode of this Disney+ series. As Simon and Trevor wrap up their Hollywood escapade, we’ll also speculate on what lies ahead for Simon, sharing insights and thoughts from the creators.

Join us as we celebrate Simon Williams’ career-defining role and its surprising conclusion.

After the chaos caused by Simon’s ionic powers on the Wonder Man set, Trevor steps in to advise him to “savor every moment.” Why? Because as Damage Control closes in, he’s taken on the mantle of The Mandarin to take the fall for Simon’s blunder. Trevor is subsequently arrested and sent to a high-security prison.

Even with Trevor out of the picture, Wonder Man continues to thrive. Simon receives the original Wonder Man glasses and becomes a sensation in the superhero film, with Joe Pantoliano stepping in as Barnaby. At the premiere, Simon’s family and agent shower him with accolades, with his agent noting he now has the “pick of projects,” despite previous attempts to steer his career.

The project in question appears to follow a small-town prison officer. However, this is merely a cover for Simon’s true intentions. Chuck, the officer, works at the same prison where Trevor is incarcerated. As part of his “research,” Simon, adopting the alias ‘Alfonso,’ gains access to the facility as a trainee.

Inside the prison, Simon finds Trevor. The two reconcile, and Simon uses his ionic energy to break into Trevor’s cell, helping him escape through the roof. In a final act of kindness, Simon secretly deposits money—likely from his Wonder Man earnings—into Chuck’s account to help with his daughter’s medical expenses.

Wonder Man got his Hollywood ending. Despite feeling a twinge of dissatisfaction with his rising star status and the guilt of leaving a friend behind, Simon rescues Trevor at the conclusion of Wonder Man. However, we don’t see where they head off to next.

This part of the Wonder Man finale is ripe for speculation. While Marvel Studios may not reveal their plans anytime soon, our best guess is that Simon and Trevor will be laying low for a while. Perhaps they’ll catch a play at the Globe or revisit some of Trevor’s old haunts? Simon has already shown he can blend in when needed, and Trevor has a knack for escaping prison—so we like to think they both find a happy ending.

Wonder Man wasn’t packed with cameos, but we were thrilled to see The Mandarin make a return. Earlier in the season, we caught a glimpse of Trevor Slattery from the Iron Man 3 era, and here he revives the character with a menacing voice and tied-back hair, crafting a believable cover for his Hollywood infiltration as The Mandarin, all while deflecting attention from Simon’s explosive mishap.

Throughout the series, Simon’s powers were hinted at, particularly at his mother’s house and the damaged wall in his apartment. The finale showcases more of Simon’s abilities, including superhuman strength, the use of ionic rays, and flight. But is he a mutant? The creators were vague in their response.

While Simon hasn’t faced off against the heavyweights of the MCU yet, his power level likely ranks high among non-cosmic heroes, especially considering the near-invulnerability granted by his ionic energy in the comics. Coupled with Simon’s undeniable charm, he emerges as one of Marvel’s most formidable new heroes—if he returns.

The fourth episode of Wonder Man focused on D-List actor DeMarr Davis, shedding light on the ‘Doorman Clause,’ a rule that effectively bars those with superpowers from appearing in films. Doorman, an obscure character from Marvel’s comics, possesses a unique ability: a dark void within his body that allows matter—and people—to pass through. After a stunt gone wrong during filming, Davis finds himself trapped in the void and presumed missing or dead.

As confirmed by Damage Control Deputy Secretary Heyerdahl, Doorman will be “monitored for the rest of his life” and subjected to government experiments—another reason Simon was eager to leave the acting world behind in the Wonder Man finale.

While Simon Williams took center stage in Wonder Man, will he remain a minor player in the MCU moving forward? Showrunner Andrew Guest hinted at a possible future in an interview, stating, “I think Marvel’s approach to this is to let each project stand on its own, and if an audience connects with it and if they connect with the character, then they can figure out how to keep using them.”

Reading between the lines, it seems there are no immediate plans for Wonder Man, including a second season. However, if fans embrace the character, it could pave the way for his return to the MCU.

Guest added, “Hopefully, people fall in love with Simon Williams, and he can continue to live on.”

From a narrative standpoint, having Simon Williams in Marvel’s arsenal is an intriguing idea. He’s close to the power level of some of the MCU’s most formidable heroes and villains, while largely free from the baggage of other Marvel projects, aside from Trevor Slattery. This makes him a versatile option for team-ups or crossovers at any time. Could he team up with Spider-Man? Absolutely. Fly alongside Captain Marvel? Why not? For Wonder Man, the possibilities are endless—as long as he gets a callback.

In a slight departure from Marvel tradition, Wonder Man does not feature a post-credits scene in any of its episodes, including the finale. So, there are no hints or teases for Simon’s future here.
