James Gunn Supports The Flash Writer for Upcoming Batman Film: “My Writing Shouldn’t Be Judged by Others’ Direction”

DC fans were less than thrilled when it was revealed that Christina Hodson, known for her work on The Flash, would be writing the upcoming Batman film, The Brave and the Bold. However, James Gunn, head of DC Studios, has defended her against the critics.

Gunn stated, “I will only say anyone maligning Christina Hodson’s screenwriting skills has almost certainly never read an actual screenplay by Christina Hodson – she’s one of the writers who was with us early in the DCU planning stages.” He emphasized that judging her writing based on the direction of others is unfair, as significant creative liberties can alter the final product.

The Flash, which debuted in 2023, received mixed reviews, earning a mere 63% on Rotten Tomatoes and grossing $271 million worldwide against a projected budget of $220 million, marking a financial setback for Warner Bros. and DC Studios. However, Hodson’s previous work on Birds of Prey, featuring Margot Robbie, was better received by critics, even if it didn’t perform well at the box office.

Despite The Flash’s struggles, Gunn remains optimistic. Alongside Hodson, Andy Muschietti, who directed the 2023 film, is also on board for The Brave and the Bold. Muschietti is recognized for his work on the 2017 adaptation of IT and its sequel, as well as the recent spin-off series IT: Welcome to Derry.

Details about The Brave and the Bold are still scarce, but it will focus on Batman and his son, Damian Wayne, who takes on the role of Robin. DC has yet to cast a new Batman, confirming that Robert Pattinson will not reprise his role, as this film will be distinct from Matt Reeves’ The Batman 2.

A release date for The Brave and the Bold has not been announced. When questioned about rumors of a 2027 start date, Gunn remarked, “The universe is rife with incorrect information about The Brave and the Bold on every level.”
