Nintendo Makes Screenshot Sharing a Challenge in Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream

Earlier today, Nintendo unveiled exciting details about the upcoming Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream. This charming life-simulation sequel is set to launch in April for both Switch and Switch 2. However, if you plan to share your in-game antics online, be ready to snap photos of your screen with your phone, as Nintendo is restricting in-game screenshot sharing.

On January 29, following a new Nintendo Direct focused on Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, fans discovered additional information on the company’s support site. As highlighted by a social media user, the sequel allows players to create characters and throw them into hilarious scenarios with NPCs, but sharing those moments online will be a bit tricky on both consoles.

According to a post on the game’s support page, Nintendo emphasizes that Tomodachi Life offers a lot of “freedom,” which can lead to “unpredictable moments.” This unpredictability poses a challenge.

“While these moments are often fun for players, we recognize that out-of-context scenes may be misunderstood or may not reflect the spirit in which the game is intended to be enjoyed,” Nintendo stated. “To support this commitment to creating welcoming experiences for everyone, and considering the unique gameplay in Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, we have decided to implement restrictions on certain image-sharing features.”

While the support page doesn’t detail the specific restrictions, the official Japanese website for the game includes a notice stating:

The console’s functions for transferring images to smartphones, posting directly to social media, and automatically uploading images (exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2) will not be available.

The notice does confirm that players on Switch 2 can still use Game Chat to share gameplay from Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream. Still, it’s frustrating that Nintendo is imposing these limitations, especially since anyone can simply use their phone to capture and share screenshots. This won’t stop players from posting silly images of characters in amusing situations, which is likely what Nintendo is trying to avoid.

It’s important to note that Nintendo isn’t completely blocking screenshots; they’re just making it harder to share them online.

“We understand that some players may find these restrictions limiting,” Nintendo mentioned on its support page. “However, they reflect Nintendo’s ongoing philosophy of creating experiences that bring smiles to everyone who plays.”

Some have speculated that this move is an attempt to prevent another “Swapnote incident,” which involved inappropriate messaging through Nintendo’s platform. However, taking a screenshot of a funny moment in your game and sharing it online is a common feature in modern consoles. Nintendo’s decision to complicate this process seems odd, especially considering that everyone has smartphones and will share whatever they want regardless. It’s also worth noting that this is the first Nintendo game to officially feature gay and non-binary Miis.

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream launches on Switch and Switch 2 on April 16. Just remember, don’t share any weird screenshots, or you might find yourself on Nintendo’s radar.
