Baldur’s Gate 3 Director Swen Vincke Addresses Criticism, Acknowledges Concerns Over Monetization in Gaming

Swen Vincke, the head of Larian Studios, is calling for a kinder approach to criticism in the gaming community.

Recently, he voiced his concerns about what he sees as unjust criticism, particularly in light of the backlash against the PvP shooter Highguard, which has faced harsh reviews on Steam from players with minimal playtime. In a follow-up message, Vincke emphasized that his issue lies not with criticism itself, but with its often hurtful nature.

“My point wasn’t that I have an issue with criticism,” Vincke expressed in a detailed Twitter post. “What I mean is that it doesn’t have to be hurtful. In my opinion, that creates a divide among people who share the same passion and ultimately want the same outcome: better games. Constructive criticism has a much greater impact.”

He reflected on his own experiences, recalling that he received his first threats of violence back in 2009 simply for trying to create something enjoyable, which some felt fell short. However, he also acknowledges the valid frustrations within the community, noting that many beloved games are being compromised for profit, leading to disappointment.

Vincke attributes the success of Baldur’s Gate 3 to the value of constructive feedback and expresses his appreciation for both casual and professional reviewers, some of whom are now part of Larian. He stated, “They are my first point of contact when I’ve been working on something for too long and can’t tell if it’s good anymore. Often, they’ll tell me that what I created isn’t great, but they do it in a way that helps me understand why. That’s invaluable.”

In addition, the director addressed the controversy surrounding the AI in Divinity, acknowledging that it “invokes a lot of emotion” but clarified that the studio is simply “researching and understanding the cutting edge.”
