The first trailer for Saru Science’s The Ghost in the Shell anime has arrived, and it’s stunning.
With red tachikomas and a blue-haired Motoko Kusanagi, the first official trailer for the 2026 adaptation of Ghost in the Shell hits all the right notes. In just 35 seconds, we catch a glimpse of familiar characters and the essence of Masamune Shirow’s iconic 1989 cyberpunk manga, hinting that this new take by Saru Science studio is on the right track. The trailer also confirms that Ghost in the Shell is set to premiere in July 2026.
Though brief, the trailer showcases the crucial elements: the sprawling, cynical, industrial metropolis where Public Security Section 9 operates; the tank-hybrid Tachikoma gliding through the city as it deactivates its camouflage; and Motoko Kusanagi sporting the ’80s anime design fans have long awaited.
Saru Science has already demonstrated its animation prowess with the dynamic combat scenes in Dan Da Dan, showcasing a keen ability to capture the varied tones and rhythms of that fast-paced world. The team includes notable talents like director Toma Kimura, known for Devilman: Crybaby and Dan Da Dan, alongside Shuuhei Handa, the chief animation director and character designer, who has contributed to visually stunning projects like Kill la Kill, Darling in the FranXX, and SSSS.Gridman.
Announced in early 2025, this adaptation by Science Saru isn’t the first anime inspired by Shirow’s work, but it seems to be the most faithful, incorporating original designs from the manga. Previous Ghost in the Shell adaptations have drawn from Shirow’s universe but often ventured into new narratives. The 1995 film remains the closest adaptation to the original manga—until now.
