The director of RRR announces the release date for their upcoming film.

RRR took the gaming world by storm with its epic tale of friendship set against India’s struggle for independence, becoming a global sensation and even snagging an Oscar for Best Original Song. Director S.S. Rajamouli is aiming even higher with his next project, Varanasi, which spans millennia, showcasing everything from Hindu mythology to futuristic battles in a thrilling adventure. Last November, Rajamouli unveiled the film’s title, inspired by the sacred Indian city along the Ganges river, along with a captivating three-minute teaser. Now, we have an official release date: Varanasi is set to hit theaters worldwide on April 7, 2027.

While the specifics of Varanasi’s storyline are still under wraps, Rajamouli has confirmed that part of the film draws directly from the Ramayana, an ancient Indian epic detailing the life of Prince Rama, believed to be the incarnation of the Hindu god Vishnu. The narrative will also venture into the near future, where an asteroid poses a threat to Earth.

The cast features Mahesh Babu in a dual role as both Rama and a warrior named Rudhra. Priyanka Chopra makes her return to Indian cinema as Mandakini, a character shrouded in mystery but seen wielding a gun in her promotional material. Additionally, Prithviraj Sukumaran takes on the role of Kumbha, a villain who navigates in a wheelchair outfitted with mechanical limbs reminiscent of Doctor Octopus.

There’s still a lot to uncover about Varanasi, but with the release date now set, fans of Rajamouli’s work can circle April 7, 2027, on their calendars. That’s just 14 months away!
