Prime Video’s upcoming comic book series blends time manipulation with a steamy crime thriller.
Anything is possible in the world of adaptations. The acclaimed comic series Sex Criminals, created by Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky, is set to make its live-action debut on Prime Video. While adaptations are common for the streaming service, the unique content of Sex Criminals may have delayed its journey to the screen until now. There was even a previous attempt to adapt it a decade ago that ultimately fell through.
The story follows a woman who experiences time stopping when she has sex. She encounters a man with the same ability, and together they use their powers to pause time and pull off bank heists. It’s a brilliant concept, executed nearly flawlessly by Fraction and Zdarsky. However, the narrative’s heavy reliance on the characters’ sexual encounters might have deterred adaptations, even in an age dominated by provocative series like Game of Thrones.
The adaptation is being developed by co-creators Tze Chun, Emily V. Gordon, and Kumail Nanjiani, with Gordon and Nanjiani’s Winter Coat Films collaborating with Prime Video, Fraction, Zdarsky, and LuckyChap. Nanjiani will also appear in the series, though his specific role hasn’t been disclosed. If we had to speculate, he seems like a perfect fit for Jon, the male lead.
“I’ve been a fan of Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky’s Sex Criminals since the first issue hit the stands,” Chun expressed in a statement. “This has been my dream project for over a decade, and co-creating this show with Emily and Kumail has been one of the creative highlights of my career.”
Gordon and Nanjiani added, “Sex Criminals is exactly the kind of project Winter Coat aims to bring to life: love stories in unusual settings. From the moment LuckyChap introduced us to Matt and Chip’s comic, we knew we wanted to bring these characters to the screen and are thrilled to do so alongside Tze Chun and Prime Video.”
As of now, no additional casting has been announced, and further details about the project remain under wraps. But soon, you’ll be able to catch Sex Criminals on Prime Video.
