New Ghost in the Shell Trailer Honors the Iconic Manga, Promising a Thoughtful Adaptation
The first trailer for the newest adaptation of Ghost in the Shell has dropped, showcasing the distinctive blend of sci-fi aesthetics and political intrigue that has captivated fans for nearly four decades.
Science Saru’s 2026 version of Ghost in the Shell is anticipated to align more closely with Masamune Shirow’s iconic manga than previous adaptations. While we await the unfolding of its narrative—centered on the Major’s pursuit of a ‘ghost hacker’ in the near-future setting of 2029—there’s already a lot to be excited about with this series, set to debut in July.
The trailer, which you can check out above, seamlessly merges an ’80s vibe with a gripping sense of paranoia, setting the stage for a thrilling conspiracy. In just 30 seconds, it has rocketed to the top of my most-anticipated anime list for the year—it’s that captivating.
The soundtrack also deserves a shout-out. Composed by Taisei Iwasaki, Ryo Konishi, and Yuki Kanesaka, the music perfectly complements the visuals, showcasing their deep understanding of the project.
In a statement, Konishi expressed his excitement, saying, “I could hardly believe I would be responsible for the music of such a project… but I approached it with my whole soul, determined to handle this precious world with care. I followed the whispers of my Ghost!”
Ghost in the Shell has a rich legacy on screen, with the 1995 film often regarded as one of the greatest anime movies ever made. Other adaptations, like the Stand Alone Complex and Arise series, have also found success.
However, the Hollywood adaptation featuring Scarlett Johansson did not resonate well with audiences, facing criticism for its casting choices and failing to capture the essence of the original.
