“Driven by a craving for more Silksong, a Hollow Knight player creates the ultimate Savage Beastfly using 16 community-chosen mods, including the ‘Trobbio Sensory Overload.'”
For some fans of Hollow Knight: Silksong, simply diving into the completed game wasn’t enough, leading them to explore mods to enhance Team Cherry’s eagerly awaited sequel. Among the most dedicated is YouTuber and Twitch streamer SuddenlySpoons, who has spent weeks crafting a version of the infamous Savage Beastfly boss fight that’s increasingly straying from reality.
For the past 16 days, SuddenlySpoons has invited Reddit users from the Silksong community to suggest modifiers for the Beastfly encounter, with the most popular suggestion being implemented next. This cycle of voting and modding will persist until SuddenlySpoons can no longer conquer the Savage Beastfly.
SuddenlySpoons discovered Hollow Knight through Xbox Game Pass and, upon learning about Silksong, felt compelled to dive deeper. “After completing my first playthrough of Silksong and exhausting everything I could do on that save, I realized I felt empty inside. I needed more Silksong,” he shares.
The catch? SuddenlySpoons didn’t know how to create mods. Fortunately, modder cometcake575 released a user-friendly level editor for Silksong called Architect, making it accessible even for those new to modding.
Here’s the current, impressive list of modifications made to the Savage Beastfly fight (the redux version, set in the lava flows) so far:
The latest top comment on Reddit suggests: “You know what these fights need? More visual clutter! Add in some Subway Surfers gameplay and Family Guy funny moments so people can actually focus on the video.” Reddit giveth, and taketh away.
The most challenging modification has been the spinning fleas bouncing around the arena. SuddenlySpoons had to get creative to work within the limitations of Architect. “I imported pngs of the fleas, made them spin for fun, and then programmed them to move randomly,” he explains. “I also placed invisible bumpers along the same paths as the fleas to create the illusion that they were pushing me around. The physics aren’t perfect, but those two fleas have taken me out more times than I can count.”
The most significant increase in difficulty has come from the intermittent lava falls during the fight, which disrupted the usual strategies and severely restricted movement and safe zones. “I was constantly dashing into the lava or getting knocked into it,” SuddenlySpoons admits.
“As for how far I can realistically go, it’s tough to say,” he continues. “It really hinges on how generous Reddit is with their suggestions. So far, they’ve done a great job of gradually increasing the challenge, but it only takes one outrageous request to end it all. I can handle more visual chaos and attacks for a while longer, but if they suggest something like using a blindfold or only one hand, it’s game over.”
Surprisingly, SuddenlySpoons, like many, is astonished that this challenge has lasted as long as it has. “I have a feeling Day 30 will be the end,” he speculates. “I can’t even picture what the fight will look like by then, but the community is really invested, so they’ve given me some leeway to keep it going. I think there’s still plenty of life left in this challenge, and I’ll push as far as I can.” Gaining double health certainly helped, but from my experience with Megabonk last year, I know that endless hitpoints don’t matter if you can’t see or move.
What began as a way to enjoy more Silksong and experiment with modding has turned into content for SuddenlySpoons’ YouTube channel, but there’s also a sense of pride involved.
“When Silksong launched, I knew it could be my game,” he reflects, having chosen to pursue content creation as a career. “As I made more Silksong videos, I improved significantly. Eventually, I realized that the challenges I was tackling for my videos were far tougher and crazier than anything I’d seen on Reddit or YouTube. I even started to wonder if I was the best Silksong player out there. So when I came up with this challenge idea, I knew it was the perfect way to find out.”
I’ll say this: despite the incredible speedrunners and no-hit masters making Silksong look easy, I haven’t seen anyone tackle a Beastfly like this.
Slay the Spire 2 pulls a Silksong, prompting indie developers to rush their roguelikes to market to avoid losing players to “an absolute juggernaut in our own genre.”
