Following the uncensored release of Cyberpunk 2077 on Switch 2, Dispatch’s developer believed they could follow suit and is now collaborating with Nintendo on future plans.
Superhero workplace dramedy Dispatch, created by the former TellTale developers at Adhoc Studios, has faced criticism for its launch on Switch and Switch 2, which included mandatory censorship not found in other versions of the game. In response, the developers have stated they are working with Nintendo to address some of these censorship issues, expressing surprise that they couldn’t follow the lead of other titles like CD Projekt Red’s games.
Some early purchasers have sought refunds for the port, and Adhoc explained that their silence since launch was due to efforts to maintain a good partnership with Nintendo. Prior to this, Nintendo had issued a statement urging players not to blame them for the situation.
Adhoc clarified that Nintendo has specific content guidelines, and Dispatch simply “didn’t meet those guidelines,” prompting the necessary changes for the game to be released on the handheld consoles. “That’s what happened here. Honestly, we thought this would be obvious since we’re the devs that released the fully uncensored version of the game on other platforms,” they noted.
The censorship of Dispatch raised eyebrows, especially since titles like The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 are available on Nintendo consoles with similar mature content. Adhoc shared their initial assumption that Dispatch would be treated similarly, but during the porting process, it became clear that this was not the case. They requested a disclaimer on the store page to inform customers about the differences in content, and while they worked with Nintendo to get this approved, they acknowledged a mistake in the placement of the disclaimer.
“We intended to clearly inform potential buyers that the content was censored. While we didn’t control the language, we did control the placement. Unfortunately, we placed the disclaimer in a section literally titled ‘Disclaimer,’ instead of the ‘About The Game’ section. We only realized this after launch when we saw feedback about the lack of visibility. It was there the whole time, just in a spot that made it seem like we were trying to hide it. This is entirely our mistake, and we corrected it on the Americas store pages a few hours after launch to improve visibility. We’ve also added a disclaimer before purchase,” the studio explained.
Currently, Adhoc is “working with Nintendo on a path forward,” but they can’t provide specifics on what changes will be made just yet. “We’re confident we’ll be able to push an update to address at least some of the censored content,” they added. “I want to be clear that due to development time and the console submission process, we’re looking at weeks, not days.”
The developers aimed to style Dispatch like “a premium animated television show” to avoid the pitfalls that led to player rejection of Telltale’s Walking Dead.
