Showrunner of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Embraces Episode 3 Twist as an Open Secret

The latest episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms delivered a jaw-dropping twist that shifts the entire narrative… but if you’re in the loop, you might already be aware of it.

For those who haven’t caught up yet, consider this your spoiler alert for episode 3.

By the end of the episode, young Egg is unveiled as Aegon Targaryen, the brother of Aerion. He went for a shaved head to disguise his signature blonde locks and blend in.

“Very secret, despite someone we won’t name spilling the beans at a Comic-Con in front of 5,000 people,” Parker shared. “Honestly, I came to terms with it a while back. Ryan Condal pointed out early on that [Egg’s secret] isn’t just a plot twist; it’s a character trait, and it could surface sooner.”

Condal, the showrunner of House of the Dragon, is well-versed in the Targaryen saga.

“This insight was crucial because it added depth for those in the know, and for anyone who might get spoiled, it creates an extra layer of anticipation about when Dunk will discover the truth, allowing viewers to catch subtle hints that might fly over the heads of casual watchers,” Parker continued. “And if you managed to avoid spoilers, the end of episode 3 offers a fantastic twist that propels you into the latter half of the season. But I hope we’ve been discussing Egg, the Stable Boy, leading up to episode 3.”

Egg’s true identity was pretty much an open secret for anyone familiar with George R.R. Martin’s works, as The Hedge Knight has been around since 1998. The show also dropped plenty of hints about Egg’s identity, with one being especially clear for fans of the original Game of Thrones series. In fact, Joffrey Baratheon even (kind of) spoiled the reveal back in season 4. Plus, there’s the intriguing prophecy in episode 3 that hints at the destinies of Dunk and Egg.
