HBO Executive Confirms House of the Dragon Will Conclude After Season 4, Uncertain About Extended Finale

HBO’s chairman and CEO, Casey Bloys, has confirmed what many fans have speculated: House of the Dragon will conclude after its fourth season.

In a conversation, Bloys addressed showrunner Ryan Condal’s anticipation that the fantasy series, which explores the Targaryen civil war set 200 years before Game of Thrones, would wrap up with season 4. Bloys stated, “Yes, that is the idea. The plan has always been to trace the history of the Targaryens. If you’re familiar with the books, you know how the Targaryens’ story unfolds. So, there is a natural conclusion to this particular saga of House Targaryen.”

While the end of the series seems assured, the specifics regarding the episode count for the fourth season remain uncertain. “Ryan is working, like any show, on this: he is finishing post-production on season 3 and collaborating with the writers on what season 4 will look like. I don’t know where he’s landed on the episode count yet,” Bloys mentioned.

The third season of House of the Dragon is set to debut later this year, but recent discussions have focused on the ongoing tensions between George R.R. Martin and showrunner Ryan Condal. After voicing concerns about season 2 on his personal blog, Martin elaborated on the creative differences in a subsequent interview.

“I would give notes, and nothing would happen,” Martin shared. “Sometimes he would explain why he wasn’t implementing them. Other times, he would say, ‘Oh, OK, yeah, I’ll think about that.’ It escalated, and I became increasingly frustrated. Eventually, HBO advised me to submit all my notes to them, and they would relay our combined feedback to Ryan.”

During a Zoom call with HBO, Martin reportedly stated, “This is not my story any longer.”
