Apex Legends is leaving the Switch platform.

Apex Legends made its debut on the Nintendo Switch back in March 2021, but now, five years later, Respawn has revealed that the game will be pulled from the Switch when Season 30 kicks off on August 4.

“Season 29 will be the last update for Apex Legends on Nintendo Switch,” Respawn announced via their official social media account. “Future seasons of Apex Legends will still be available on Nintendo Switch 2.”

According to the post, players can continue to enjoy the game and buy Apex Coins until August 4, after which it will no longer be accessible on the original Switch. Respawn confirmed that support for the game on Switch 2 will continue, along with support on all other platforms. Any in-game currency purchased on Switch will be linked to players’ EA accounts, making it available on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation, Xbox, and Windows PC versions.

“We are incredibly thankful to the Nintendo community that has been with us since Day 1, and we look forward to seeing you on the Dropship on Nintendo Switch 2,” Respawn’s statement expressed.

Naturally, Switch players are feeling frustrated by this news. Many opted for the Switch due to its portability and are not keen on the idea of either investing in a Switch 2 or being limited to a non-portable console or PC.

“HOW AM I GONNA PURCHASE MY LOBA SKINS NOW WHEN I’M ON VACATION?” one player lamented in response to the announcement about the August 4 cutoff.

Conversely, some players—likely those who don’t exclusively play on Switch—seem to back the decision, with one commenting, “Honestly, we need more developers to discontinue last-gen game support/production. You’ll never move forward while focusing on the past.”

PlayStation 4 users also expressed concern, worried that Sony’s last-gen console could be next on the chopping block, despite Respawn’s assurance that there are no plans to end support for other platforms.

“As we continue to evolve Apex Legends’ content and technical foundation, our goal is to deliver a high-quality experience,” Respawn stated regarding the Switch announcement. “Thanks to Nintendo’s investment in the Nintendo Switch 2, the platform offers a fantastic handheld experience for Apex Legends.”

“Switch must be full of hackers,” one player joked, referencing the 2024 announcement that Apex Legends would no longer support Steam Deck due to Respawn’s concerns about cheating among Linux users.

Respawn did not specify the reasons behind the decision to discontinue support for the Switch.
