Michael Rooker’s Guardians of the Galaxy Role Came After His Sudden Exit from The Walking Dead

Michael Rooker recently shared the pivotal moment that led him to collaborate with his long-time friend James Gunn on the first Guardians of the Galaxy film.

“Gunn wanted me for the role. He had me in mind from the start. We were all set to go,” Rooker explained about his character Yondu, the formidable Ravager leader who mentors Peter Quill (Chris Pratt). However, Rooker was also heavily involved in AMC’s The Walking Dead, playing the character Merle Dixon.

“Then we realized, oh no – The Walking Dead and Guardians of the Galaxy are filming at the same time. [Guardians] is in London, [The Walking Dead] is in south Atlanta. It’s not gonna happen,” Rooker recalled.

Gunn then discussed a “small role” for Rooker instead of Yondu. But in a twist of fate, the phone rang again just after the initial opportunity seemed lost. “A minute later, I get a call from an AMC producer. ‘Oh no, they’re killing me off? Absolutely, I won’t tell a soul. That’s just the way it is.’… If they hadn’t killed me off when they did, I wouldn’t have been able to take on Yondu,” Rooker remembered.

However, the casting wasn’t finalized just yet. Rooker noted that Gunn hadn’t spoken to Marvel about Yondu’s role to secure the go-ahead.

Ultimately, everything worked out for Rooker. Yondu emerged as a standout character in the first two Guardians of the Galaxy films, adding an unexpected emotional depth that defined Gunn’s successful MCU trilogy.
