Nintendo’s N64 Switch Online Controller Works with Analogue 3D, But Here Are Some Superior Alternatives

A fresh update for the Analogue 3D has arrived, enhancing its status as a top contender among retro consoles. This update is loaded with improvements, from refining timing accuracy to introducing a total playtime counter for your game library. It even adds support for Nintendo’s Switch Online N64 controller. However, I have to be a bit of a downer here: while the added compatibility is nice, there are definitely better controller options out there than Nintendo’s “exclusive” accessory.

If you’re set on using the Switch Online controller with your Analogue 3D, you can snag one for $54.99. While it’s not my top pick, it’s a decent choice if you’re after something that feels authentic and offers wireless functionality. Personally, I ended up giving mine to a friend because I prefer the original controller, and since then, I’ve tried out several superior alternatives.

The 8Bitdo N64 controller is a solid option for the Analogue 3D, priced at $44.99. Now available in gray with vibrant buttons, this gamepad combines modern design with the classic N64 layout, and its hall-effect thumbstick delivers impressive accuracy.

For my go-to controller, I can’t help but recommend the 8Bitdo N64 controller, which is designed specifically for the FPGA system. It features an incredibly precise thumbstick, an authentic button layout, and wireless capabilities, typically retailing for around $34.99 (the stylish gray version is $44.99).

Before you start drafting a complaint, I understand the love for the original Trident-shaped controller. If you can’t picture yourself exploring Termina without it, you’ll be glad to know that the Analogue 3D update also improves support for the 8Bitdo Mod Kit. If you’re using the $39.99 wireless kit, you can now easily toggle between the Virtual Controller Pak and Rumble Pak with the ZR button.

That mod is a great way to go wireless, but you can also upgrade your original N64 controller with just a hall-effect joystick for less money. The mod is straightforward, and I can vouch for its accuracy based on my own testing. Plus, it’s only $14.50, making it a more budget-friendly option than Nintendo’s new controller.

I might consider picking up the NSO N64 controller again to see how it performs in 2026. However, my last experience with it revealed that the stick was a bit too sensitive in games like GoldenEye. While the build quality met Nintendo’s standards, I could definitely feel the difference. After getting used to my original controller and the Analogue 3D version, the only reason I’d revisit the Switch Online accessory would be for the authentic optical-mechanical stick and how it feels when brand new.

Alongside the new controller support, the 1.2.0 update addresses various technical quirks of the Analogue 3D, which should please purists. The full patch notes are available on the console’s site, detailing improvements to the FPGA chip that enhance CPU timing and functionality—important for speedrunners and developers seeking precision.

One of the notable new features is the “Force Progressive Output” option in the settings menu, which switches interlaced graphics to progressive scan. This allows the console to display a clean 480p image in games like Turok 2, resulting in better image quality.

Another significant addition is the playtime stats feature for the 3D’s library. Now I can see just how long my current Donkey Kong 64 playthrough is dragging on, but it’s a useful addition that shows when you started a game and how long you’ve been playing.

I have a feeling this won’t be the last time I discuss the Analogue 3D, especially regarding NSO N64 controller support, which I wholeheartedly welcome. It would be exciting to see even more gamepad compatibility in the future, and while I have plenty of recommendations, I’ll share more as I discover them.
