Yuji Horii, the mastermind behind Dragon Quest, is set to release an RPG-inspired manga chronicling his journey in creating the legendary JRPG series.

JRPG legend and the mastermind behind Dragon Quest, Yuji Horii, is set to receive a remarkable honor: a manga that will detail his life and career.

Scheduled for release on February 24, this new educational manga biography will be published by Shogakukan. It promises to take readers on a journey through Horii’s life, starting from his childhood on Awaji Island in Japan to his current role as CEO of Armor Project, the co-owner of the Dragon Quest franchise alongside Square Enix.

What’s particularly exciting is that the manga will incorporate RPG elements, reflecting Horii’s belief that “life is an RPG.” Readers can expect to see Horii “encountering companions who become his greatest strengths,” “making choices at life’s crossroads,” and “facing various hardships.”

However, it’s disappointing that there doesn’t appear to be an English translation available at launch. For those who can read Japanese, though, this 160-page visual adventure, which Horii himself supervised, will soon be within reach.

While Horii is best known for Dragon Quest, he also played a pivotal role in the creation of Chrono Trigger, a title often hailed as one of the greatest JRPGs ever. At 72, he continues to guide the Dragon Quest series as supervisor and director, including the highly anticipated but currently quiet Dragon Quest 12, which was announced in 2021. The last update from Horii came in May 2025, where he mentioned that the team is still “putting lots of work” into it and that it will “be great.”
