Firefox Introduces Option to Disable AI Features
Mozilla is set to introduce a new feature that allows users to manage AI functionalities in Firefox. Starting February 24th, an “AI control” option will be added to the settings menu, enabling you to toggle individual AI features on or off. This includes a built-in AI chatbot, translation services, AI-generated tab group suggestions, and more.
Over the past year, Firefox has joined the ranks of Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome in enhancing its browser with AI capabilities. One notable addition is the “shake to summarize” feature for iPhone users, which provides AI-generated summaries of online content. Additionally, Firefox is developing an “AI Window,” an opt-in browsing experience that incorporates an AI assistant and chatbot to assist with web searches. Mozilla’s CEO, Anthony Enzor-DeMeo, expressed confidence in the potential for a trustworthy AI browser from a technology company.
In response to user feedback regarding Firefox’s AI integration, Enzor-DeMeo previously promised an AI “kill switch.” He emphasized the importance of choice in maintaining user trust. The upcoming update will allow users to disable all current and future AI features, as well as manage whether Firefox uses AI to create alt text for images in PDFs or generate key points in link previews.
Ajit Varma, Firefox’s vice president of product, highlighted the diverse opinions within the community regarding AI. He noted that while some users want to avoid AI altogether, others seek genuinely useful AI tools. This feedback has driven the development of the new AI controls, reflecting Mozilla’s commitment to user choice.
