Alone in the Dark’s impact on survival horror helped shape Resident Evil’s direction, and now you can grab the entire trilogy at no cost.
Modern survival horror owes a lot to Resident Evil, but it didn’t just appear out of thin air. The genre’s roots can be traced back to Alone in the Dark, which laid the groundwork for countless nightmares. To mark two years of dedicated preservation efforts, GOG is giving away the trilogy that started it all.
You can grab the collection featuring Alone in the Dark 1, 2, and 3 for free on GOG. Just visit the store page, claim your copy, and these classic titles will be yours to keep forever. Although the giveaway wraps up on February 5, the games will remain in your library as if you had bought them.
While Alone in the Dark may seem a bit dated now, it’s definitely worth a revisit, especially to understand how survival horror evolved. It was pivotal in introducing static camera angles and tank controls, elements that Resident Evil would later adopt. In a 2014 interview, RE director Shinji Mikami noted that without the influence of Alone in the Dark, his game might have turned out as a first-person shooter.
Alone in the Dark is part of GOG’s Preservation Program, which started in 2024, showcasing the store’s commitment to keeping select titles updated and compatible with modern systems. In a recent announcement, GOG highlighted that this giveaway of a “cornerstone of survival horror history” celebrates their ongoing preservation efforts.
“Game preservation doesn’t happen by accident,” GOG emphasizes. “It happens because people care – and choose to support it.”
